UK proposes diesel and petrol car ban

In an effort to allay fears, the Automobile Association (AA) has assured the public that the proposal is still in the discussion phase and has not yet been enforced.

THE United Kingdom’s recent proposal to ban the sale of all new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040 has raised some concern among the South African public.

In an effort to allay the general distress, the Automobile Association (AA) has assured the public that the proposal is still in the discussion phase and has not yet been enforced.

“It is, however, a discussion based on sound reasoning; emissions from vehicles remain a serious issue in Europe, and lead to health issues. In addition, the United Kingdom has to meet commitments agreed to at the Paris Climate Accord,” the association said in a press release.

What’s more, since the proposal does not seek to ban the existence of all petrol and diesel vehicles, the association said it does predict a ‘significant’ phase out period where combustible engine vehicles are replaced by alternative energy vehicles.

“Already several major manufacturers are moving in this direction.”

According to the AA, there has been no suggestion from the SA government that petrol and diesel vehicles will be banned in the near future, however, the county might be thrust into the electronic car age as there might be no sale of other vehicles available.
