Large green mamba rescued in eMdloti

Influx of snake activity expected for Newsel Road in eMdloti due to development.

LOCAL resident Jason Arnold has warned residents of Newsel Road in eMdloti to be on the lookout for venomous and non-venomous snakes on the move in the next couple of the days due to ongoing development. Arnold rescued a large green mamba from one of the homes on Tuesday afternoon.

“This particular section of eMdloti (Newsel Road) and surrounds are going to get an influx of snake activity over the next few days due to the clearing and development starting up in the bush/sugarcane areas behind them. These poor creatures have so little area left,” Arnold said.

“Snake activity patterns change dramatically over the course of a year. Throughout the cool months, snakes are relatively inactive but they try and eat as much as they can before winter. Mambas (green and black) however, breed in winter and I get a lot of call-outs for them around now for the mating season, however with the development there is bound to more snakes on the move,” he said.
