North Durban community warned of bogus workers

The gang of five, wear municipal or Telkom workwear as well as reflector jackets and mostly travel in a Hyundai H100 pickup truck or a bakkie.

POLICE are warning members of the north Durban community and surrounding areas to be aware of the resurgence of a modus operandi used by criminals to commit robberies. There have been several cases where homeowners and domestic workers in particular have been fooled by a gang posing as Telkom or municipal employees.

The gang has been spotted using a Hyundai H100. Just last week, a domestic worker and gardener were attacked after a failed robbery at a La Lucia home.

“The gang of five, wear municipal or Telkom workwear as well as reflector jackets and mostly travel in a Hyundai H100 pickup truck or a bakkie. They approach homes, pretending to be there for meter readings or any other maintenance purposes. As soon as the occupants open the gate for them, they hold them up at gunpoint and rob them of valuables,” said Durban North SAPS, Capt Raymond Deokaran.

Provincial SAPS spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane echoed Deokaran’s sentiments.

Municipal employees do not come in groups when conducting meter readings and they are usually on foot. No Telkom employee will come into your house if you have not reported any fault with their customer services,” said Zwane.
