Thieves strike at Durban North shopping centre

The armed gang stole alcohol in excess of R10 000 from a liquor store in the centre.

FOR the second time in three months, thieves struck at the Pick n Pay Hyper by the Sea. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, five armed men broke into the shopping centre at about 5am on Saturday morning. The gang then robbed the liquor store.

The suspects also broke into the MTN store but were unable to steal anything as they were disturbed by security.

“The gang of five damaged the main doors of the entrance before breaking into the liquor store. The men stole alcohol in excess of R10 000. The men also tried to break-into the MTN store but were disturbed by security. The men fled the scene in an unknown vehicle. A case of business burglary has been opened,” he said.

The MTN store was broken into, but nothing was taken in the robbery.

Pick n Pay spokesperson, Tamra Veley, confirmed the incident.

“Pick n Pay can confirm a break in at their liquor store at Hyper by the Sea, where a small quantity of liquor was stolen before the alarms went off and the perpetrators fled the scene,” she said.

At the beginning month another gang robbed the MTN store at La Lucia Mall stealing thousands of Rands worth of merchandise. This is the second business burglary since the arrest of the Kingpin allegedly behind the mall robberies that have plagued KZN.
