Casey has got the right moves

The Durban North dancer won the Young Adult Newcomer Female section at the South African Line dance Masters competition in Johannesburg recently.

SHE may be a relative newcomer in the competitive world of line dancing but if her results are anything to go by, Casey Chiang (left), is a name to look out for. The Durban North resident recently competed in South African Line dance Masters competition in Johannesburg. Chiang, who is part of the Floorcraft Dance Studio was one of three local dancers to win in their respective divisions.

Chiang, won the Young Adult Newcomer Female section, while fellow Durban North resident, Alison Wixley won the Chrystal Novice Female section. La Lucia’s Gill Townsend won the Silver Advanced Female. She also won the same section at the European championships in March, making her the European and South African Champion.

“My aunt introduced to me to the sport and I started dancing with her socially in 2015. It was only last year that I took part in my first competition. I ended up as runner-up in the newcomer section and this year I was delighted to go one better. I think what attracts me to line dancing is it’s not one-dimensional as some people think. There’s different styles, which adds a different dimension on stage,” she said.

Speaking of newcomers to the dance style, Chiang had only words of encouragement.

“It is so much fun. My biggest advice would be don’t be afraid of stepping out of your boundaries. Do as much as you can. It is also a great confidence booster so just do it,” she said.
