Run-away success for Pink Phoenix fundraiser

Over 400 people supported the bright and beautiful fundraiser on Sunday.

PINK was the prominent colour on the uMhlanga promenade on Sunday morning as the Pink Phoenix Cancer Foundation’s first ever Tutus and Tekkies 5km Fun Run kicked off.

The organisation’s founder, Sharon van Straaten, said she was blown away by the community’s support.

“We were hoping for at least 250 entrants, but we are thrilled that we had over 400 people take part in the event. This will most definitely become an annual event,” she said.

Through ticket sales alone the organisation has raised an estimated R35

000.

The funds raised will go towards cancer awareness, as well as the organisation’s Kids 4 Life initiative, which provides financial assistance to the families of child cancer patients.

“It was exciting to see so many men support the event – especially while wearing their tutus,” added the foundation’s project manager, Michelle Luyt.

“Our aim for today was not only to raise awareness on cancer. It was also an opportunity for cancer survivors and their families to celebrate life, while others were able to honour and remember friends and loved ones who have been lost due to cancer,” said Van Straaten.

Additionally, the event also served as a community project for the Umhlanga Rocks Lifesaving Club. The club sold food and drinks at the event to raise some funds for its projects.
