The campaign serves to raise awareness about poaching and the important work that the SANParks K9 units.

A WHOPPING R400 000 was raised in a fundraiser for the K9 anti-poaching unit. uMhlanga resident, Grant Melville, along with two seasoned hikers trekked through Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Mountains dubbed the “Climb for K9 Drakensberg Grand Traverse” which served to raise awareness about poaching and the important work that the SANParks K9 units are doing to curb and counter poaching of the country’s wildlife.

Impressively, Melville, Ian Shooter and Jeffery Mthabela, who have extensive bush experience, traversed 230 kilometres across the Drakensberg over 13 days.

Melville, a SANParks honorary ranger since 2012, said the trek far exceeded his expectations.

“It was such a fantastic response from the community. To raise R400 000 is incredible, it was way more than I expected. I think the donation comes at a time where we are seeing the devastating effect of rhino poaching. As much as we raised, it was important for us to raise awareness for the K9 unit and what they do,” he said.

The 47-year-old said the conditions on the trek were tough.

“It really doesn’t matter how much training you do, it’s a humbling experience. Thankfully, with our experience we were able to stay mentally strong. It was incredibly tough – 13 days. Fortunately we didn’t have much rain, it was very cold though. We had a lot of snow to get through. I can’t tell you how much you miss warm showers,” he quipped.

The campaign continues until the end of July 2017. If you can contribute supplies or assistance to the Climb for K9 or want to learn more, email climbforK9@gmail.com.
