ANC stalwart condemns lack of action over state capture
Dr Frank Chikane says South Africans deserve better from government.
SOUTH Africa is more vulnerable now than it was during apartheid. That’s according to ANC stalwart Dr Frank Chikane who was speaking at the Diakonia Council of Churches in Durban on Tuesday night.
Dr Chikane was the keynote speaker at Diakonia’s conversation themed, ‘The South Africa We Pray For’. He addressed a partisan audience about how the recent political landscape in South Africa looks.
“We live in extraordinary times. We went through apartheid and we thought we were free and that was a mistake. We waged a morally based struggle under the leadership of Madiba, hoping for a moral society afterwards but that is not what we have now,” said Chikane.
The South Council of Churches’ vice chairperson said that it was sad to see how the state has been captured.
“State capture has seen one family benefit from state resources at the expense of South Africans and no one has been arrested. We fought for liberation but now we are captured. Police, intelligence, secret services and all government organs have been captured,” said Chikane.
Chikane said that the ‘Gupta email leaks’ show that people in government in South Africa have completely lost all regard for authority.
“The Gupta email Leaks show that people acted blatantly and openly because they know they have power, they are untouchable. Ministers have violated executive ethic codes and nothing is done about it. This is not the South Africa we struggled for,” concluded Chikane.
