WATCH: Body found floating in Umgeni River

Police could not confirm whether the body was that of the robber presumed to have drowned on Sunday.

FOUR days after an alleged robber presumably drowned in the Umgeni River, police recovered a body near the Connaught bridge.

The body was spotted floating in the river by a member of the public, who alerted police on Thursday afternoon, said Blue Security TV’s Andreas Mathios.

However, police were unable to confirm the identity of the body.

“The deceased resembles the description of the armed robbery suspect that is presumed to have drowned on Sunday,” said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

Mbhele confirmed that an inquest docket had been opened at Mayville police station for investigation.

The suspect allegedly drowned after a shoot-out with police.

It is believed the man and four other accomplices involved in an attempted business robbery in Springfield Park.

The suspect was seen with one of the accomplices trying to swim across the river.

The police managed to arrest one of the suspects. He was found hiding in the reeds along the river near Intersite Avenue.
