WATCH: Illegal dumping, Glenhills spirals out of control

Residents say dumping has once again escalated in the area.

FED up with the ongoing issue of illegal dumping along Ryde Place and Malacca Road the community has called on the authorities to take a stronger stance against offenders.

Some residents are even demanding that those found guilty of the offense must be ‘named and shamed’.

“I drive along this road everyday and I have seen the dumping escalate,” said Angela Kelly, an outraged Ryde Place resident.

Kelly said the illegal dumpers were inconsiderate towards everyone who lived in the area.

“I find it shocking that people think they can just offload their rubbish along a residential road,”she said.

“You really have to see the illegal dumping in this road to understand the shocking mess that residents have to put up with and of course the never ending workload it creates for the Durban Solid Waste (DSW),” added Des Dawson, who lives on Mackeurtan Avenue.

“I have seen the  DSW  hard at work cleaning up Ryde Place and the very next day someone will ignore the Malacca Road dump just a few meters away and unload their rubbish. It’s a war that DSW can never win,” he said.

Dawson said he believed that if the dumping, and other forms of vandalism are ignored, its sends a message that nobody cares and that this kind of behavior is acceptable.

Employees at the Malacca Road refuse site said the dump is open from 7 am to 5pm every day, including weekends. The Springfield landfill site also accepts rubble and rubbish.
