Thief fashions hook from pool scoop, steals keys

There has been two other thefts out of vehicles in the area which may be related.

AN Eastview Road resident has described how a thief improvised using a broom handle first, and then a pool scoop pole to steal his car keys from his home. The resident, who did not want to be named, said he knew of two other incidents where cars had been broken into in the area. All of the incidents have occurred early in the morning.

“I was just making tea when I heard a sound of the window, initially I thought it was a cat. I then walked around looking for my keys only to discover I couldn’t find them and I just couldn’t quite place where it was. Then I noticed my motorised gate opening and went out to inspect, that’s when I found a man standing in my yard. He didn’t run or anything, he just stood there and began to tell me he was homeless and hungry, I pressed the panic button which alerted the thief who bolted.

“Unbeknownst to me, he had thrown my keys in the garden after fleeing. He had obviously been trying different buttons on my keys, which was on a lanyard. A short walk around the house and I discovered both my pool scoop and broom were missing, that’s when the security company discovered both of the items that had iron pieces wrapped around the top to form a lasso of sorts. So the thief had stuck the broom through the window first and couldn’t reach the keys and then tried to used the scoop which was longer,” he said.

The relieved resident said he was happy his keys had been found and urged residents to be vigilant.
