Durban’s pug walk fundraiser a barking success

Durbanites and their pugs got their 'tails wagging' in support of Pug Rescue South Africa.

IT was a pug-tastic morning as hundreds of curly-tailed critters and their proud owners descended on the Durban beachfront on Sunday for the annual Durban Pug Walk.

The event, organised by Durban North residents and volunteers, Storm Veronie and Andre Botha, aims to collect funds and raise awareness for the non-profit organisation (NPO), Pug Rescue South Africa.

The NPO, founded by Cheryl and Malcolm Gaw, strives to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home abandoned, neglected and surrendered pugs.

“The funds are used to pay for vet bills, food, blankets and other items for the rescued or surrendered pugs that are in our care,” explained Veronie.

“Ultimately our goal is to give these lovable dogs a second chance at life,” she added.

Through last year’s event the duo managed to collect over R4 000 for the organisation.

This year, other small dogs such as Chihuahuas and Bulldogs also made an appearance.

“We welcome all small to medium-sized dogs at the walk. In addition to raising funds and awareness the event is also about celebrating man’s best friend and showing people what kind of life our canine companions deserve,” said Veronie.
