Cycling academy blown away by support
Cycling community rally around academy and lend a helping hand.
LOCAL resident, Hylton Belitzky said he has been blown away by the generosity of the cycling community, local companies and residents who have helped get a cycling academy aimed at training development riders up-and-running again. In April, 20 track bicycles worth more than R210 000, a gazebo and several chairs from a storage locker at the Cyril Geoghegan Velodrome were stolen. The bicycles belonged to the Future Star Sports Academy, which is run by Belitzky.
One of the track bicycles was recovered a few days after the theft and break-in in uMlazi.
“Since the theft the KwaZulu-Natal Track Cycling paid for clear-view fencing to be put around the roller door garages where our bicycles are kept. Another sponsor fixed our roller door which was damaged in the break-in the last time. Another sponsor put in new dog magnets, upgraded the alarm and put in alarm passive infra red PIR detectors.

“Then several KZN cycling clubs put in a generous donation which has allowed us to replace seven track bicycles which is just amazing. This has allowed us to get the academy up-and-running again. It’s been incredible and touching to see how everyone has united around us. We are so grateful for everyone who helped us. A large part of our academy is dedicated to honing and developing young cyclists and it’s great to be able to get back to training the youngsters again,” he said.
Belitzky said he had also spotted two of the stolen bicycles in the Durban CBD.
