WHEN Luke Lovemore’s guidance counsellor at Northwood School demanded he take music as subject, neither one had any idea how important that choice would be in forging his future. It was one of the many choices made by the Durban North resident that would land him in the finals seven of The Voice SA, a popular Mnet production aimed at finding new singing talent.

At only 23, Luke, has a strong idea of what is going on in the music world and says he has every intention to make the best of every opportunity his success on the TV show affords him. “Once you stop hustling it all ends,” said Luke in a telephonic interview with the Northglen News this week.

The determination and what his mother, Dale Schultz unashamedly calls ‘his stubborn streak is the other side of the coin when dealing with Luke. Schultz said he son was ‘a gentle giant’, but so determined’. A quality she said he gets from his father, Scott Lovemore, who is fully behind his son’s endeavours.

This weekend he faces off against the other six contestants and says he is planning something completely different. “People have only seen that raspy rock side of me, but my plan this weekend is to go out there and show people I have a really soft side. I’m actually a big softy,” he laughed while refusing to divulge exactly what he will be performing on Sunday night’s.

“I’m going out there to sing a beautiful song and I’m going to be singing it completely free and I want people to just go, ‘Wow, I’ve never seen that side of him before.”

Luke’s initial audition took place at the home of |The Sharks rugby team. “I auditioned at Kings Park, the rugby stadium. There were something like 17 000 people that auditioned and they picked only 100 from around the country to do the blind auditions,” he said explaining how his journey to fame began.

When both Lira and Karen Zoid, turned their chairs for him in the blind auditions he chose to join #teamLira and has blossomed under the tutelage and mentorship the South African music sensation.
