‘I’m lucky to be alive’ North Coast Road crash victim

Lungelo Cebekhulu suffered a broken shoulder and several fractures in his leg and ankle.

THE victim of the horrific North Coast Road crash this morning said it’s a ‘miracle’ he was still alive. Lungelo Cebekhulu, was one of 18 people, including two infants and an 80-year-old man who were injured in the accident.  Cebekhulu was hit by the taxi and suffered a broken shoulder and several fractures in his leg and ankle. He also had a number of deep cuts to his head which required stitches.

CCTV video footage (see below) of the crash went viral following the accident.

The 32-year-old was waiting for a tombstone, for his mother’s grave, to be loaded into the boot of his blue Toyota Tazz when the accident happened. What’s more, his wife and seven-year-old son were in the car when the taxi collided with his car and two others.

“It happened so fast, I just remember a loud bang as the taxi hit the pavement but it happened so fast that I had very little time to react. I somersaulted through the air and landed hard, when I came to I saw the taxi had hit my car with my wife and child inside, my son was in the backseat playing on the tablet and my wife was in the front passenger seat. I wanted to check if they were safe. They were crying and screaming and I tried my best to get up, but I couldn’t. The pain in my leg was too severe.

“Thankfully they managed to escape any injury. They were both strapped in. In fact, if they didn’t have their seat-belts on, it could have been much worse. When I saw the video I realised how lucky I was, it’s a miracle. It looked like the driver of the taxi swerved when he saw me which is why he collided with two other parked vehicles,” he said.

Cebekhulu is currently recovering in Addington Hospital and is set to undergo surgery to his ankle later this week. The KwaMashu resident’s car has been written off and Cebekhulu said he is focusing on getting better.

“I’m trying to get healthy again before I speak to the police about the incident,” he said.
