LISTEN: uMhlanga resident on a mission to preserve our planet

We chat to Caroline Hartog, one of this year's Miss Earth regional semi-finalists.

MAKING a difference by mitigating the impact of litter on our natural environments is something uMhlanga resident Caroline Hartog, holds close to her heart. She is one of this year’s Miss Earth regional semi-finalists and has embarked on a series of activities urging communities to keep the environment clean.

Hartog, alongside other Miss Earth contestants and South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) conducted a clean-up along Durban’s beaches for World Oceans Day on Thursday. Hartog also hosted a clean-up at Glenashley Beach this past weekend.

“Being part of Miss Earth is about creating sustainability and educating people about the effects of global warming, pollution and other factors on the earth. Through our environmental work, we hope to combat the destruction of our natural heritage and preserve Mother Earth,” she said.

Hartog, who feels she embodies the values of Miss Earth began her journey after being tagged on Facebook.

“I got tagged by a friend on Facebook and she sent me a message saying she thought I could do it. I’d never heard of Miss Earth until then and reading about it made me realise how amazing the leadership programme is,” she said.
