ARMED men stormed a home on Bellamont Road in eMdloti on Wednesday just before lunchtime. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the armed men tricked the domestic worker into letting them into the home.
“The incident occurred at about 11am. The suspects were armed with handguns and told the domestic worker to keep silent while they ransacked the house. The suspects stole several items including a TV, a laptop and an undisclosed amount of cash. We are not sure if the cases are linked but we’ve had several cases where suspects try and trick domestic workers to let them onto the property,” he said.
“We are urging residents to educate their domestic workers and gardeners never to let anyone into the property, and make them aware of panic buttons and emergency numbers so they are better prepared. Criminals often use the line that they are from the City or the domestic’s employer asked them to deliver something, often domestic workers are too trusting. Unfortunately criminals see domestic workers as easy targets,” he said.
No arrests have yet been made.
