Glen Anil residents furious with fibre optic cable laying

Residents have been left without electricity and water for hours.

GLEN Anil residents have expressed their anger at the placing of fibre optic cabling in the area which they say damaged verges and has inconvenienced them. Residents have been left without electricity and water for hours and say they have had no communication from the company involved.

Nathaneal Naicker said he spoke to the contractor on a number of occasions about the quality of work.

“We are asking to be treated fairly. We’ve had periods of time with no electricity or water after the guys working on laying the cabling hit the pipe. We don’t have a problem with the work they are doing but don’t put the residents under increasing pressure.

“Another neighbour wasn’t able to get into their driveway because they had dug a trench in front of his house without telling him. I’ve spoken to the contractor and told him he can’t do any more work until the issues are addressed. This is devaluing my property. I also feel this wasn’t communicated properly by the company doing the installation,” Naicker said.

Niven Maharaj, project manager for Intra Connect, responsible for laying the cabling on the street said he was open to hear the residents’ concerns.

“With regards to the water pipe situation, the vibration of the compacting machine cracked the pipe which caused the leak. We immediately informed the municipality. I do apologise for what has happened and want residents to know that I’m open to any engagement from them should they have complaints. We did hand out letters to residents informing them about the work we are doing. We will always try and accommodate the residents,” Maharaj said.
