Taxi collides with car, crashes into business, 18 injured

One person, a man in his 80s was entrapped in the wreckage of the taxi.

AT least 18 people, including two infants, were injured in a collision involving a minibus taxi and a vehicle on Chris Hani Road (North Coast) this morning. According to Crisis Medical’s Kyle van Reenen, the taxi, after colliding with the vehicle, crashed into a building.

“A man believed to be approximately 80 years old suffered serious injuries and was entrapped in the wreckage. Advanced life support intervention was needed to stabilize the man whilst Ethekwini Fire and Rescue Services worked fervently to free the man using specialized hydraulic equipment, including the jaws of life. Once free, the man was placed onto a mechanical ventilator to assist him in breathing and was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital,” Van Reenen said.

According to Netcare 911’s Nick Dollman, both Metro Police and SAPS were on scene.

“The patients were transported by various ambulance services to hospital for further assessment and care.The scene was also attended by the Metro Police and SAPS. One of the drivers of the minibus taxi’s involved was detained by police,” he said.

The incident comes two weeks after a fatal crash where three people were killed after a taxi collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Rosary Road and Queen Nandi Drive.
