CPF/Police look for way forward after Riverside murder

CPF chairman hopes to get the City to install CCTV cameras along Riverside Road.

FOLLOWING the brutal murder of a man along Riverside Road last Friday, residents and roleplayers have united in an effort to fight crime in the area. Last week Brian Daish, chairman of Greenwood Park Community Police Forum sub forum 4, met with members of Marshall Security, concerned residents and Umgeni Estuary Conservancy (UEC) spokeswoman, Margaret Burger.

The residents discussed the brutal assault and subsequent murder of a man on Riverside Road near the Umgeni Bird Park. The incident was the latest in a string of crimes in the area. One of the residents present at the meeting had his bicycle stolen while he was on the road.

“This is an issue we are continually dealing with but at the heart of it is social issues which need to be addressed by Metro Police. We have vagrants, prostitution and drug related crimes occurring. Alcohol is also playing a major part in this spike.

“I’ve asked the Greenwood Park SAPS to approach the three liquor stores in the general vicinity and tell them not to sell alcohol to already intoxicated people. At the moment we are looking for solutions to these problems. I’ve even suggested fencing the entire length of Riverside Road like the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve has,” he said.

Daish said he will also be meeting with Durban North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley and Metro Police regarding the installation of CCTV cameras on the road.
