Protesters loot shops in Avoca Hills

Three foreign owned shops were looted in Khabazela Village.

SEVERAL foreign owned shops have been looted in Khabazela after violent protests flared up in KwaMashu on Monday night. The protests  follow reports of four children who were allegedly abducted on their way to school in KwaMashu. It’s believed some of the protesters blamed foreign nationals for the missing children and set about looting several shops.

The sporadic protests spread to several sections of KwaMashu, Lindelani and Ntuzuma. The violence and looting also spread to Khabazela Village, Avoca Hills, where three shops were looted.

Greenwood Park SAPS spokesman, Con Zenzele Chonco, is currently on scene in the township outside one of the shops that was looted.

“Some of the shops were looted and the people told the foreigners they want them to pack up their shops and leave. We’ve managed to bring the situation under control. Several of our officers are stationed in the area. While tension in the area remains high, the situation is under control at the moment,” he said.

Ward councillor for the area, Pete Graham confirmed three shops were looted last night.

“The community of Khabazela Village are standing with those affected and are helping them salvage what little they have left of their shops. Some of the residents have given up their garages to help store items from their shops. I’m appalled by the thuggery committed by those responsible for this looting, especially as this is Africa Month. I have been in contact with the residents to see how I can assist,” he said.
