10 arrested in uMhlanga roadblock

A total 146 drunk drivers have been arrested and charged with drunk driving in the last 12 roadblocks.

DURBAN North SAPS and Metro Police held a roadblock on the M41 going towards Mount Edgecombe on Friday night resulting in the arrest of  10 drunk drivers. The drivers arrested on the night now means that in the last 12 roadblocks held at night, 146 drunk drivers have been arrested and charged for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said police had been focusing on the M4 in both daytime operations and roadblocks at night.

“We’ve had several complaints about speeding and reckless driving on the M4. We are trying to make it safer for motorists. Once a week we hold a daytime operation targeting motorists illegally using the emergency lane and we have regular operations on the M41 and  M4 targeting drunk drivers. This route is one of the main arterial routes used by motorists,” he said.

Deokaran warned of more roadblocks during the course of the year.

“Too many motorists are still risking their own safety as well as that of other road users by driving their vehicles after they have consumed alcohol. We cannot continue to ignore the problem and allow drunk drivers to take to the street,” he said.
