Volunteer, a living legend

uMhlanga resident Sylvia Jacobs was recently decorated by SAAMBR with their Living Legends award for her three decades of commitment to marine education.

UMHLANGA native Sylvia Jacobs was recently decorated by the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) for her three decades of commitment to marine education. Jacobs was given the Living Legends award for her dedication as a volunteer at uShaka Marine World.

“I got involved at the old Sea World Durban out of curiosity. My family spend a lot of time in the water, like fishing, so I initially only wanted to find out a little bit more about the ocean. From there I was hooked and it just snow balled,” Jacobs recalled.

The uMhlanga resident has for over 35 years educated learners and adults about the ocean and marine conservation.

“Her love for the ocean and its inhabitants and passion for sharing has seen her inspire literally hundreds of thousands of young people to care about marine conservation,” praised Ann Kunz from SAAMBR.

Jacobs said that she is so proud of the researchers she has worked with over the years from SAAMBR, saying that she received more than she has given from the ‘highly ethical’ group of experts. Jacobs is also an avid artist, saying that her love for the ocean inspires her mosaics, paintings and illustrations.

“The colours of the sea are just so beautiful, I can’t help but be moved to use it as a source of inspiration in my works,” she mused.
