Two arrested in Springfield narcotics bust

It is suspected the consignment was destined for Singapore.

TWO people were arrested after the SAPS K9 Unit followed up on information stating that drugs had been sent to a courier company in Springfield Park. Captain Nqobile Gwala, provincial spokesman, said police found eight boxes of ‘African gift items’ which contained a suspected narcotics substance.

“A total of 8.8 kg of the substance in eight boxes were seized. The suspected drugs has been handed over to our forensics team who will conduct an analysis to confirm the identity of the drugs.

“A suspect was arrested by the Durban Flying Squad and a man who is believed to be a key suspect in this case was later arrested in Phoenix. It is suspected that the consignment was destined for Singapore. The arrested suspects aged 58 and 60 will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon,” she said.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised police officers for the seizure of the huge consignment of suspected narcotics.

“Drug abuse affects all communities in the province and we will not hesitate to act decisively should information of drug trafficking be brought to our attention,” he said.
