Cable theft suspect arrested in Effingham

Armed response officers arrived at the scene to find the fence damaged and noise coming from the back of the premises.

A SUSPECT was caught in possession of copper cables in Effingham on Friday morning.

According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, at about 8:30am armed response officers were dispatched to the scene after the emergency contact centre received signals from a fence alarm.

“On arrival the officers noticed that the electric fence had been damaged and noises could be heard coming from the rear of the property. They then scaled the fence and conducted a thorough search of the premises. A man was subsequently found hiding in the rear of the property in an attempt to evade arrest,” he said.

Van Reenen said the man was arrested on site after it was discovered that he was in possession of various items of copper cabling. The suspect was then handed over to the SAPS for further investigation.
