The SABC wants you to pay them for your online viewing

The cash-strapped public broadcaster wants people to pay them for watching content on their mobile devices.

JAMES Aguma, CEO of the embattled and cash-strapped public broadcaster SABC, shocked parliament on Wednesday by telling them they want changes to be made to the Broadcasting Act.

Aguma said he wants South Africans to pay the SABC for content they view online. At the moment, a TV licence only covers a device that receives a TV signal. However, as alternative methods of viewing content become more popular with audiences, Aguma said they need to look at other ways of collecting revenue.

The DA’s shadow minister for communications, Phumzile Van Damme said, “We do not support the imposition of any additional taxes on the already overburdened South African taxpayer.

“The SABC needs to investigate innovative means of funding the public broadcaster, rather.”
