Walkers will make the annual trek from Monday to Sunday this week across the Cape coastline to raise environmental awareness along the way.

THIS week, Ramini Naidoo will embark on a 120 kilometre journey by foot.

On Monday, Naidoo set off from Gansbaai to trek for six more days in the seventh annual Penguin Promises Waddle for a Week. The yearly adventure takes walkers along the Cape coast. The Waddle takes animal keepers from various animal facilities around South Africa through three penguin colonies (Dyer Island, Stony Point and Boulders Beach) on their campaign to raise awareness for the environment.

Naidoo has worked for the South African Association for Marine Biological Research since 2001 supporting the work of both the Oceanographic Research Institute scientists and uShaka Sea World educators who work together to investigate and disseminate environmental information.

“Working with the scientists and educators has inspired me in so many ways. I’ve learnt so much being a part of their everyday activities and have been inspired working with these amazing passionate people. I am proud to be part of marine conservation in South Africa” said Naidoo.

She went on say, “Along the route we plan to visit a number of primary schools, penguin colonies, environmental organisations and inspire both the locals and visitors we meet along our journey. I hope to encourage them through the Penguin Promises campaign to embrace environmentally sustainable lifestyle choices.”
