SAPS warns worshippers following mosque robbery

On Monday night, a mosque north of uMhlanga was robbed by 10 armed men.

DURBAN North SAPS has warned worshippers to report suspicious activity and be vigilant after an attack at a mosque in Verulam. Ten men armed with AK-47s and pistols stormed the mosque on Monday evening in the middle of evening prayers.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa, the incident occurred at the Hazelmere Mazaar near the Verulam CBD.

“Witnesses reported that a firearm was held to the head of a 14-year-old boy. The suspects then forced the boy’s father to open the door to the facility before robbing them,” the company’s Facebook page said.

While Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, acknowledged that no incidents had occurred in the area, he warned worshippers to be on high alert.

“We are aware of the incident in Verulam and are appealing to worshippers at mosques and others places of worship to be extremely vigilant. Not only did they commit a crime, they violated the sanctity of this house of worship,” he said.
