Citizens to have their say on City’s budget

Each ward will have their say about the proposed budget for the 2017/18 financial year.

THE City’s budget proposal is open to public scrutiny as the 2017/18 Budget Hearing and Integrated Development Plan (IDP) Consultation Roadshows got underway on Monday. All 110 wards of the eThekwini Municipality will have their say about the City’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year.

The draft budget was tabled by the mayor to Durban’s Executive Committee at the end of March.

“This year’s draft budget is composed of a capital budget of R7,5 billion and an operational budget of R37,5 billion. The proposed tariff increases are 6.9 per cent on rates, 1.88 per cent for electricity, 15 per cent for domestic water consumers, 17 per cent for business water consumers, 9.9 per cent for refuse removal, and also 9.9 per cent for sanitation,” said Mayor Zandile Gumede.

In addition to individual ward hearings there will also be regional discussions for each of the municipality’s six regions. The budget will also be presented to traditional leaders and the cultural, religious and business sectors for their input.
