‘Udder’ly committed to Cancer ‘moo’vement
We chat to the Reid family who will be raising funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC).
DISTINCTIVE in their black and white pattered bovine kit, The Cows are ready to raise as much as they can for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC). The Cows have become a distinctive feature of the Tour Durban because of their reliably raucous and fun-loving approach.
Northglen News recently caught up with one of the core riders and committee members, Gords Reid. The Danville Avenue resident said he was looking forward to this year’s challenge.
“This year I’m riding the tandem bicycle with my nephew. We are going to tackle the 45 kilometre fun-ride. Being part of the KZN cow herd, it’s all about soaking up the atmosphere and not being competitive. Thanks to the Tour Durban organisers, we have a whole new and very accessible way to join in and contribute. We just want to get as many people as possible to come out and ride with us,” he said.
This is the 10th year anniversary since the inception of The Cows and they have set a target of R10-million to raise for CHOC this year.
Amy Reid, Gords’ daughter, who cycled on a tandem bicycle with her dad at the Amashova last year, has managed to raise a large sum of money to achieving that goal.
She has also begun her own Facebook page to raise funds for CHOC and has raised R34 000 in a short space of time.
“It’s going to be a different challenge, it’s easier on a tandem because you do half the work. For me though, it’s about being part of a new experience. I’ve learnt to be comfortable on my own. I’m really excited about the event and hopefully I’ll be able to make a huge difference for CHOC,” the Virginia Preparatory School learner said.
