Gang hold security guard at gunpoint in Athlone

Four suspects remain at large after making off with a white Toyota Yaris.

A GANG of four robbers held up a security guard at gunpoint earlier today in Marlborough Crescent. The guard was on patrol just after 5 am, when four men approached him.

Kyle van Reenen from Marshall Security said, “While the  community patrol guard was conducting his patrol, he told our armed reaction officers that four men approached him in a vehicle inquiring about a white Toyota Yaris parked on the side of the road.”

The gang then got out of the car they were in, with firearms, and ordered the patrol guard to keep quiet, van Reenen said. He added the security guard said two men broke in to the Yaris before driving it away. The other suspects followed suit,  fleeing the scene in an unknown direction.

The gang remain at large despite a subsequent search of the area. South African Police Services took over the scene for further investigation, van Reenen said.
