Concern over spike in cyclist muggings

Two more incidents involving the mugging of cylclists, both on the M19, have come to light.

DURBAN North resident and chairman of the eThekwini Cycle Safe Forum, Aroon Patel, has expressed his concern after a spike in robberies of cyclists. Last week, a cyclist was robbed at the intersection of Virginia Circle and Mackeurtan Avenue at 4.30am on Tuesday last week.

A week prior to the robbery, a Durban North resident was attacked on the pedestrian walkway of the Ellis Brown Viaduct bridge. Now, two more incidents, both on the M19, have come to light.

“There have been two separate incidents of cyclists being targeted on the M19 recently between the garages and the bridge over Mountbatten Drive. In one of the incidents, two suspects pushed the cyclist. Though someone was arrested, I urge cyclists using that route to be cautious, alert and to please cycle together in groups and refrain from wearing expensive jewellery. My sense is if you are cycling in outlying areas, I’d advise people to ride in large groups and perhaps have a follow vehicle if possible ,” he said.
