Local demonstrations planned for Wednesday

The organiser of the event said that anyone is welcome to participate but that the protests will be kept small to stay within the law.

VIRGINIA resident, Shaun Ryley along with other locals are organising their own #ZumaMustFall demonstrations for Wednesday. This is to coincide with the National Day of Action march planned to take place in Pretoria on April 12.

Ryley, said although he is a DA member, councillor and supporter, the march was being organised in his personal capacity.

The Pretoria-based protest is reported to be organised by a coalition of opposition parties who will take to the streets and march from Church Square to the Union Buildings. The demonstration comes after Friday’s nationwide marches against the president. The Pretoria protest is intended to further pressurize Jacob Zuma to step down.

The Durban North demonstrations will be held at various intersections in the area throughout the day. Ryley said the reason he has organised the event was because in the aftermath of Friday’s mass action across the country, residents asked him whether a local protest had been planned to coincide with the National Day of Action march in Gauteng.

He went on to say the demonstrations were not affiliated to a political party and that it is open to people from any party, civic organisation or religious group.

“Permits are not required for gatherings of 15 people or less and there will be ‘intersection captains’ stationed at each site to ensure this is adhered to,” Ryley added.
