Cyclist robbed by armed men at Virginia Circle

The bicycle is reportedly worth R90 000 according to police.

TWO men, one armed with a knife, robbed a cyclist of his bicycle on Tuesday morning. According to Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the incident occurred at about 4.30am. The bicycle is reportedly worth R90 000.

“The man was at the intersection of Virginia Circle and Mackeurtan Avenue when he was accosted by two men, one armed with a knife. They demanded the cyclist get off his bike. They riffled through his pockets and found nothing. They then made off with his bicycle,” he said.

Deokaran urged cyclists, where possible, to ride in groups.

“These was not opportunistic criminals, they know the value of the bicycle and were probably watching the cyclist.  Because sunrise is later these mornings, the criminals used the dark to cloak their movements,” he said.

The robbery comes after an attack and attempted robbery of a female cyclist at the M4 Ellis Brown Viaduct’s tower.
