Resident cuts back bush following M4 bridge attack

Andy Craig who saved the cyclist from her attackers took matters into his own hands to cut back the bushes near the arch.

FOLLOWING an attack and attempted robbery of a female cyclist at the arch by two men at the Ellis Brown Viaduct’s tower over the uMngeni River, the bushes have been cut back by local businessman. Andy Craig, who owns a CrossFit gym on Rinaldo Road was driving on the M4 when he saw two men attack the cyclist at the top of the stairs. Craig said the problem was the bridge provides cover like the bush adjacent to the freeway.

On Friday, he took matters into his own hand and cut down the bush to provide a clearer view for cyclists and runners using the route.

“I shudder to think what would have happened if I had gone past five seconds later. I’d urge runners and cyclists to remain vigilant,” he said.

In 2015, there were eight armed muggings on the walkway (going towards Riverside Road), six of those robberies involved cyclists.

Durban North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley, praised Craig’s efforts for saving the cyclist. Ryley added more could be done to secure the path.

“There’s been a series of robberies at this particular spot. Cutting back the bush only partially solves the problem. I’ve requested the City look at installing clear view fencing like they have put around Virginia Beach which will prevent incidents like this going forward. If the fence runs from the turret about 100 metres northward we’d be able to secure the spot which is popular with runners and cyclists,” he said.
