Residents tackle uMgeni River mouth clean-up

More than 200 bags of rubbish was collected on the day.

THE latest #CleanBlueLagoon clean-up has highlighted Durban’s plastic problem. Around 80 per cent of the rubbish collected on Saturday was plastic and polystyrene. Dedicated volunteers and environmentalists collected more than 200 bags of rubbish at the uMngeni River mouth.

Glenashley resident, Richard McLennan said he was pleased with the turnout especially with the long weekend ahead. McLennan and another local resident, Rudi Fokkens, used a boat to ferry rubbish from one side of the bank to the Blue Lagoon side for the City to pick up.

“It was brilliant to see so many residents show how much they care for the environment. Every bit collected makes a difference. We counted more than 200 bags of rubbish which is amazing. Polystyrene remains a massive problem and I’ve got a plan which I hope to speak to the City about to highlight the issue,” he said.
