WATCH: Councillors cut overgrown bush on M4
Last month, several residents voiced their concern over the overgrown foliage along the M4 highway stretching between Glenashley and uMhlanga.
WARD councillors Heinz de Boer and Shaun Ryley, started cutting back the thick vegetation along the M4 this morning. Starting with the La Lucia on-ramp (going south), the duo used a chainsaw and a panga to cut back the alien invasive plants encroaching on merging lanes and onto the freeway lanes. Concerns have been mounting over the safety of the encroaching vegetation onto the asphalt and for the branches hanging over the road.
Last month, several residents voiced their concern over the overgrown foliage along the M4 highway stretching between Glenashley and uMhlanga.
De Boer and Ryley said they had received numerous complaints pertaining to the stretch of highway but that certain sections were in fact owned by the provincial government.
“This is the responsibility of the provincial government. The M4 is littered with alien invasive plants and this has been going on for more than six months. We are sick and tired of waiting for province to cut back the bush and branches,” he said.
Durban North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley, said the work would be done in sections.
“We are going to do this in sections, because there are bushes growing out of the medians. It’s even taken over some of the emergency lanes so there is no side to pull over,” he said.
