THE shark nets protecting bathers along the Durban’s beaches were also damaged during the awesome tidal waves that struck the coastline last Sunday, the City of Durban confirmed in a Facebook statement.
The statement, released on Thursday, 16 March said that six of the seven shark nets that went missing after the tidal waves on Sunday 12 March, had been recovered. It went on to say that nets have been reinstalled all of the beaches between uShaka Beach and the Country Club. “The last remaining nets will be installed at eThekwini and Lagoon beaches on 17 March,” it read.
The City said that all of its beaches, excluding the Country Club and eThekwini beaches have been reopened.
uMhlanga’s local beaches came out unscathed from the severe weather over the past weekend, with only large amounts of sand needing to be removed from the promenade. The sand was cleared within several days during the past week.
Durban’s main beaches weren’t so lucky however, as extensive damage was caused by the waves which swept up right through the doors of local businesses.
In the same statement, the City said that sand mopping operations were progressing well and that areas in front of commercial sites had been cleared and were to be swept using a suction truck. Also the majority of sea wall capping had been replaced. Plumbing had been repaired and the public showers are all working.
