Informal Durban North taxi rank irks residents
Residents say the taxis are parking in a manner which is obstructive to pedestrians and motorists.
RESIDENTS of Windsor Drive have voiced their concern about their residential road being used as an informal taxi rank. Residents say taxis take up part of the road making it hard for those driving on the road. Ward 36 councillor, Shaun Ryley, said the problem was an ongoing one.
“I’ve received complaints from residents on Windsor and Oxford Drive about the issue. I have been in direct contact with the Senior Superintendent of Metro Police for our area who gave me the assurance that they would be keep an eye on the problem but obviously they cannot be present 24/7. This is not an official stop. Verges are a grey area, Metro are less reluctant to fine when people park on verges, that’s grassed verges without a kerb.
“However, I agree with residents, that you can’t park in a manner which is obstructive to pedestrians and motorists. The way these taxis are parked is somewhat into the middle of the road going towards the Kenneth Kaunda (Northway) intersection. This means motorists have to divert around them which is problematic and dangerous. The majority of the passengers are domestic workers, gardeners and students using the taxis. This problem is ongoing throughout the day. If people see a vehicle parked illegally, they need to contact Metro Police, I’ve often done that when I see people illegally parked and members are sent out within an hour” he said.
