Durban film rakes in R1.6 million on opening weekend

Keeping up with the Kandasamys is in selected theatres nationwide, now.

DURBAN film, Keeping up with the Kandasamys, smashed box office expectations in its opening weekend by raking in R1.6 million. The movie, which was shot in and around Durban, came in third behind Hollywood heavyweights, Logan: The Wolverine and Fifty Shades Darker.

Award-winning producer of Keeping up with the Kandasamys, Helena Spring said about the films opening success, “Seeing the feel-good impact of Keeping up with the Kandasamys on audiences, as it celebrates family values with humour and laughter, has been a wonderful experience and I’m both thrilled and thankful for the tremendous support cinema goers are giving the film. Even though the film celebrates Indian culture and identity, the characters remain relatable across all racial and cultural lines, connecting with the audiences own familial experiences.”

The 100 per cent home-grown film stars local actresses Jailoshini Naidoo (Eastern Mosaic, Lotus FM) and Maeshni Naicker (Broken Promises) as the matriarchal rivals of neighbouring Chatsworth families, whose young adult children fall in love with each other, which forces them to team up in order to break up the blossoming romance.

Keeping up with the Kandasamys features music by Kyle Deutsch and The Parlotones. It is now showing at selected theatres nationwide.
