Diabetes leading killer among Indians and Coloureds

StatsSA have released the results for the leading causes of deaths in South Africa during 2015.

STATISTICS South Africa have released their findings on the leading causes of death among South Africans. They found that diabetes at 15.3 per cent and 7.7 per cent were the leading killers of Indian and Coloured people. Heart diseases at 11.2 per cent caused the most deaths among White people and 8.7 per cent of Black people died from tuberculosis.

Diabetes was also the main killer of women at 7.1 per cent, while most men died from TB (8.3 per cent).

 

TB was the leading underlying cause of death in South Africa as a whole. The percentage of people who died because of the disease came down from 8.3 in 2014 to 7.2 in 2015. Diabetes mellitus rose by .4 of a percentile to be the second biggest killer in the country from 2014 to 2015.

The results released by StatsSA was based on information from the Department of Home Affairs and looked at all the underlying causes of death in 2015.
