uMhlanga’s promenade to get new dog poo dispensers

New packet dispensers will also be installed for fisherman to use.

A TOTAL of 15 000 doggy bags are used along the popular uMhlanga promenade every month to dispense of dog poo. That’s according to uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct’s operations manager, Dewet Geldenhuys. He said a new dispenser for dog poo packets had just been given the all clear. The prototype for the new dispensing system was developed by Geldenhuys.

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said. “The original dispenser we developed was a little post box. People complained to us that although it was very visible it was difficult to get the plastic out. So what we’ve done through the years with other stakeholders is said that we wanted more of these things, so we developed this hardcore, cheap dispenser that is easy to handle.”

The organisation tested the prototype along the promenade and asked dog walkers for their feedback on how easy it was to use.

“It’s also very easy for our guys to refill the dispensers on a daily basis because every month and a half we supply 15 000 doggy bags to the uMhlanga promenade,” the operations manager said.

The new dispensers are expected to be rolled-out in the next few weeks.

According to Geldenhuys, there will also be dispensers for fisherman. “At all the staircases leading down to fishing spots on the beach there will be a dispenser for them to take a packet and put in their refuse to throw away at the closest bin and not leave it on the beach,” he said.
Dog poo dispensers will be located about every 500 metres along Umhlanga beach’s promenade.
