Residents voice their anger at continued illegal parking

Ward councillor, Shaun Ryley mirrored the sentiments of locals, calling motorists who park on the red lines, 'lazy and inconsiderate'.

THE constant illegal parking along Durban North’s Adelaide Tambo Drive (formerly Kensington Drive) has infuriated some residents, who have taken to Facebook to voice their anger.

In a post on the Durban North Neighbours Facebook page, local Jolene Lailvaux Smith said, “The cars parked outside Kensington Woolies are really a problem. The traffic is conjested and its almost impossible to get through. Obey the rules of the road – red lines mean no parking.”

Lailvaux Smith went on to state that parking at two shopping centres on either side of the busy road are free for an hour. She and other residents who responded to the post noted the danger cars parked in the road pose to other motorists driving along.

Ward councillor for the area, Shaun Ryley told the Northglen News that motorists who parked on the red lines could only be described as ‘lazy and inconsiderate’, echoing the frustrations of locals. “Metro Police do regular ticketing of motorists there. I have often called the 0313610000 number to report this and officers have been sent within an hour to issue fines but this does not seem to be a deterrent. I have now requested Metro Police to come with roll-back trucks and tow cars away as this will send a much stronger message,” he said.

The ward councillor went on to say that the red line along the road is clearly visible and so there could be no excuse for motorists to park there.

A similar scenario along Mackeurtan Avenue catches the ire of locals who find parking along the road also inhibits traffic flow and poses a danger to fellow motorists. Mackeurtan Avenue is also home to a busy restaurant and shopping district where parking is made available for cars.
