No fly zone for drones over Durban this week

The restrictions are a part of the general clamp down in the follow up to Armed Forces Day.

ETHEKWINI Municipality have stated in a Facebook post that drones won’t be allowed to be flown this week during the Armed Services celebrations in certain areas.
In the post the municipality said, “According to the Notices to Airmen (NOTAM), the airspace covering 10 nautical miles around Moses Mabhida Stadium and along the coast from ground level up to 27 000 feet has been declared as a restricted zone to any aircraft or drones.”

The municipality’s post went on to say that drone operators needed to remember some of the general regulations by the Civil Aviation Authority, such as needing permission for flights, not being allowed to fly drones higher than 120 metres above the ground, or within 50 metres of a person, crowd or building without CAA approval.

The Armed Services Week is being hosted by Durban this year. The public is also being notified of various road closures in and around the city for the events.
President Zuma, as Commander-in-Chief, will be in the City on Tueday to oversee Armed Services Day. This year will see the commemoration of the centenial anniversary of the sinking of the SS Mendi during World War I which was carrying members of the South African Native Corps from Cape Town to France.
This year’s festivities have been marred by numerous tragedies such as the accidental death of several servicemen and civilians from toxic gases at Durban’s naval base on Friday 17 February.
