14 fined in uMhlanga crime operation

Metro Police, Durban North SAPS and Enforce held the joint operation just before lunchtime today.

A TOTAL of 14 drivers were fined on Zenith Drive earlier this morning as the Durban North SAPS, Metro Police and Enforce Security held a cordon and search operation. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North station, 14 drivers were fined for breaking several traffic laws.

“ This is part of our visible policing and crime prevention for the year ahead. There will be more daylight operations such as this on different roads in the area. We ask residents to be patient with us because this is not about causing inconvenience, it’s about protecting the area,” he said.

“Though 14 drivers were fined for various offences, we are checking the number plates of vehicles and looking out for suspicious vehicles. We have had an increase in car thefts in the area and the station commander wants a more visible police presence at the entry points into and out of our area. We’ve held more than six operations already,” he said.

One of the drivers was also fined R500 for not wearing a seat belt while the others were fined for not having valid licenses and driving without a license.

Earlier this year a driver threatened the station with a lawsuit after he was stopped in an operation on Swapo Road (Broadway).
