WATCH: Matthew wins Midmar Mile

The Mount Edgecombe resident narrowly edged out seven-time champ Chad Ho.

MOUNT Edgecombe’s Matthew Meyer won this year’s Aquelle Midmar Mile champion. Meyer not only upset 7-time champion Ho, but he also out-sprinted American world champion Chip Peterson and Ferry Weertman.

“This was my 11th Midmar Mile and ever since entering the open race my goal has always been to win it. It was really tight between me, Chip, Ferry and Chad but around the 200 metres from the finish line it became a tight finish between me and Chad.

“I remember asking one of the stewards if I had won the race and when he assured me I had I was just ecstatic. I went over to my parents and just celebrated the special moment. My mom and dad and family have been my number one supporters so it was just surreal knowing I had won. I really gave it my all in the last few metres. It was fantastic to pull off the win,” he said.

The Varsity College Durban North student said he would be working hard on securing a spot in the South African team for this year’s FINA World Championships in Budapest.

The 18-year-old finished in a time of 18.13, while Ho came in second in 18:18.
