Durban North duo paddle for a purpose

Gords Reid and Brett Challenor will be doing this year's Dusi for two charities .

WHETHER it’s raising funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC) or helping people exit a burning hotel, there’s nothing Gordon Reid wouldn’t do to help others in need. Now the Durban North resident hopes to complete his first Dusi for charity. He has decided to partner with Brett Challenor, who has completed 17 Dusis, for charity. Not only will the duo be raising funds and awareness for CHOC, but they have also decided to complete the Dusi for the Duzi Umngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT).

The trust, which is the chosen charity of the Dusi, champions the environmental health of the uMngeni and uMsunduzi Rivers. With the marathon just two weeks away, we caught up with the duo to find out about the challenge ahead. Reid, who is also part of the CHOC Cows, who are unmistakable in their Friesian bovine patterned suits, is also involved with a number of fundraising initiatives for the organisation.

“I’ve always wanted to do a Dusi, it’s been on the bucket list. I was always going to enter the marathon with a charity angle, we’ve set ourselves a target of R30 000 to raise for both charities. Being part of the KZN cow herd, it’s all about soaking up the atmosphere and not being competitive, just having fun with the purpose to raise as much as we can,” he said.

Challenor, who will be attempting to complete his 18th Dusi, said he jumped at the opportunity to give back.

“I wasn’t planning on doing it this year, but I jumped at the opportunity to help two deserving charities out. I know Gords (Gordon) well from all the charity stuff he does for CHOC and I decided I had to get into a K2 with him. I love the atmosphere of paddling down the uMngeni River and having my good mate at my side is an added bonus,” Challenor said.
