Illegal truck stop earns ire of residents

For months, the Browns Drift Road park has been used as an illegal truck stop.

DURBAN North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley and uMgeni Park resident and CPF member, Brian Daish, have expressed concern over the park at the bottom of Browns Drift Road being used as an illegal truck stop. The road and pavement around the park which was resurfaced two years ago is now being damaged by trucks mounting the pavement. The illegal parking has also caused damage to the greening next to the pavement.

“It is a concern. We’ve spoken to the Parks Department about placing bollards or poles to stop the trucks from mounting the pavement. Taxis have also begun using the area to park off. It’s destroyed the grass to the point where we have a miniature dust bowl developing. The tar where trucks mount the pavement has been completely flattened,” Ryley said.

He added he would be engaging with the City to address the issue and find some sort of permanent solution.

Brian Daish echoed Ryley’s sentiments saying the suggestions had been minuted at a recent meeting.

“There’s a wooden gate at the entrance to the park but there’s no fence around it. We had a commitment from the parks department to address the issue but still nothing has been done which is very disheartening,” he said.
