AFTER a spike in theft of gate motors in north Durban, a man was arrested in the Avoca area in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Vigilant neighbours living in the area alerted security services at around 4.30am to the suspicious activity of a man walking along Avoca Road. The suspect was carrying a battery at the time.
Armed officers intercepted the man on Effingham Road and proceeded to question him. The suspect confessed to the officers about stealing the battery from an electric gate motor off a premises in the Avoca area.
Security services have previously urged residents to take extra precautions with regard to their gate motors. It is believed the suspect is linked to a spate of gate motor and battery thefts in the greater north Durban area of late.
Last month, Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen said “Since the start of the year, there have been 10 incidents of this nature and in the past three months, there have been 20 incidents in the Durban North area including La Lucia, uMhlanga, Glenhills and Glen Anil. We haven’t seen a huge link between the gate motor theft and house break-in. There seems to be a completely different gang doing this. Quick petty theft. They steal the motor as quick as they can and then sell it.”
The suspect arrested today was placed under arrest and handed over to the South African Police Services.
