uMgeni Park assault victim’s son speaks out

The victim's son, Bram, climbed through the same broken window her attackers used to get into the house.

THE son of Sandra Snijders, who was brutally assaulted in her home in uMgeni Park, has spoken out. Bram Snijders said his mom (68) was recovering in an uMhlanga hospital but was still having vivid flashbacks to the night of her brutal attack at her complex on Sylvania Place. He said while the physical wounds were healing, the psychological scars would remain for some time.

Sandra, who is a bookkeeper was found unconscious by her son hours after she had been attacked.

“When she didn’t arrive for work, her boss tried phoning her and also sent my Aunt, who lives in Gauteng, an e-mail. When she phoned me, I rushed to the house and shocked to find her lying on the floor face down. We believe she was attacked in the early hours of Tuesday morning. She remembers two guys in white overalls who entered her flat and assaulted her.

“I was anxiously trying to get in, my mom is very meticulous about security and all the windows were closed, and I didn’t have a key for her flat. Eventually I discovered one of the windows with aluminum bars which had been bent in. I climbed through the same window her attackers used to get into the house,” he said.

Bram said this had been the third break-in at the complex. Two days prior to his mom’s attack, a neighbour had been broken into.

“This is the last straw, there’s no way my mom is going back to the flat. My dad passed away in October last year and after this I don’t think she’ll want to be in a flat anymore. My sister lives in Texas and she’s been talking about going to visit. I think the physical wounds will heal but the psychological scars of the attack will stay with her. It’s sickening, the spike in crime in uMgeni Park has really got out of hand,” he said.

Snijders’ laptop, cellphone and purse were taken in the brutal robbery but Bram added he wasn’t sure of what exactly been taken.
